Duties:

The Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General seeks a highly motivated Financial Investigator for its Internal Special Audit Unit. The Internal Special Audit Unit monitors the quality, efficiency and integrity of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT’s) operating and capital programs and seeks to prevent, detect and correct fraud, waste and abuse in the expenditure of public and private transportation funds. The successful candidate will:

  • Investigate fraud, waste and abuse of MassDOT funds
  • Develop investigative plans
  • Analyze and interpret financial information
  • Provide financial and accounting analyses related to investigations
  • Review financial statements and financial applications to identify trends and interpret financial information
  • Locate, obtain and analyze evidence
  • Interview witnesses
  • Identify findings and prepare recommendations
  • Draft detailed investigative reports
  • Support multiple hotlines; investigate and document hotline reports
  • Work collaboratively with law enforcement and other agencies as needed
  • Assist other team members with a variety of project work.  May also participate as a team member on other non-investigative projects, including audits and reviews pertaining to MassDOT

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Minimum of two years of financial investigative experience 
  • Working knowledge of investigative procedures
  • Strong organizational, interviewing, analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience with data analytics
  • Strong writing and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge of forensic accounting and fraud schemes
  • Strong time management skills
  • Information technology skills; must be able to learn a variety of IT systems quickly (mainframe, database, etc.)
  • Must be able to multi-task and have effective time-management skills to handle several projects concurrently

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or similar professional designation
  • Experience investigating or auditing government entities
  • Experience analyzing internal controls and auditing operations
