Be a Massachusetts Fraud Watch Volunteers for the AARP Fraud Watch Network

AARP wants to help you protect your money from scams. The AARP Fraud Watch Network equips people with up-to-date knowledge to spot and avoid scams sooner. Volunteers can teach people about preventing fraud, give support to those who have been targeted, and help spread awareness of fraud to others. Every year, thousands of Americans are impacted by fraud and scams – but you can beat con artists at their own game and help to protect others by joining the AARP Fraud Watch Network as a Volunteer Fraud Fighter. The AARP Fraud Watch Network has made great strides in furthering our mission to help consumers protect themselves, their families, and their communities from scams and fraud, and to provide support when victimization occurs. Volunteer Speakers can help educate community groups, clubs or professional organizations by identifying common scams and teaching people what to watch out for to avoid fraud or identity theft.
Key Responsibilities
Fraud Fighter National Virtual Meeting Participant: Fraud Fighter volunteers are invited to attend bi-monthly virtual meetings to connect with one another, get updates, and ask questions. Role may include: attending and participating in virtual calls every two months.

Fraud Talk Tuesday Presenter/Interviewee: Present on Fraud related topics on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 12:00 to 12:30 Fraud Talk Tuesday (FTT) Zoom calls advertised nationally with between 20 and 100 attendees. *Note you must be a certified Speakers Bureau member to be the Presenter. Scripts are provided. Presenter role may include: answering questions based on topic during Fraud Talk Tuesday webinar, reviewing the Fraud Talk Tuesday script before presenting, practicing with fraud lead if desired, logging into virtual meeting 15 minutes early to test technology.
Fraud Talk Tuesday Interviewer: Ask pre-designed questions during Fraud Talk Tuesday online Zoom events which prompt the presenter to talk about certain topics. Role may include: asking questions based on Fraud Talk Tuesday script during Fraud Talk Tuesday webinar, reviewing the Fraud Talk Tuesday script before interviewing, practicing with fraud lead if desired, logging into virtual meeting 15 minutes early to test technology, monitor the webinar Q&A and chat on a case by case basis.
Fraud Talk Tuesday Tech Support (not needed at this time) Run the behind-the-scenes tech support for Fraud Talk Tuesday Zoom calls. Role may include: supporting with Zoom functions to help run the presentations, e.g., monitor chat, run slides, etc., coordinate test runs/rehearsals for presentations, and provide links to presentations for attendees after the event, e.g., PowerPoint slides, recordings, websites, monitor the webinar chat on a case by case basis
National Fraud Watch Helpline (not taking volunteers until at least after April) Become a trained Fraud Watch volunteer and support the national phone helpline number to answer questions that people across the country have about fraud. Role may include: listen to Fraud Watch Helpline calls and support fraud victims, document scam details, provide resources, support and refer appropriate cases to Fraud Watch Staff. Training is usually about 10 hours – an e course on scam scenarios, 2+ listening sessions of 2 hour shifts shadowing staff doing fraud calls; 2+ guided sessions of 2 hours each doing fraud calls as a staff member listens in. Additional training as needed. Attendance at quarterly trainings is encouraged.
Qualifications
This volunteer position would be a good fit for you if you: are committed to the mission of AARP; are passionate about helping people learn how to prevent fraud and scams; enjoy staying on top of the latest information; and are able to travel around your community to volunteer. Volunteers interested in giving presentations are especially needed.
